The film is scheduled for theatrical release in February 2027, followed by Netflix availability in April 2027. Gerwig previously directed Streep in Little Women, making the new project another collaboration between the actor and filmmaker.
Who Is Jet Li?
Jet Li, whose birth name is Li Lianjie, was born in Beijing, China. He developed an interest in martial arts at a young age and became a highly successful wushu competitor before moving into professional cinema. His martial-arts background became the foundation of his distinctive screen style.
Li gained major recognition through Chinese-language films and became particularly associated with historical martial-arts stories. His performances in the Once Upon a Time in China series helped establish him as one of the leading martial-arts stars of his generation.
Jet Li Career and Hollywood Success
Jet Li expanded his international profile through films including Lethal Weapon 4, Romeo Must Die, Kiss of the Dragon, The One, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. He also appeared in The Expendables franchise, giving him an even wider Hollywood audience.
His career is notable because he successfully carried a martial-arts performance style from Chinese cinema into international action movies. Rather than relying only on dialogue, many of Li’s most recognizable performances combine choreography, speed, movement, timing, and physical storytelling.
Jet Li Martial Arts Background
Before becoming an international movie star, Li was already highly accomplished in wushu. Harvard Business Review reported in 2026 that he won five consecutive national championships after receiving Chinese state sponsorship for his martial-arts career.
That competitive foundation strongly influenced his film work. His movement, balance, and technical control became important parts of his screen identity. Unlike actors who learned martial arts specifically for individual movie roles, Li entered cinema with years of serious competitive experience.
Jet Li Personal Life and Relationships
Jet Li has generally kept many aspects of his personal life away from the center of his public career. He has been married to actress Nina Li Chi since 1999, and they have two daughters together. Li also has two daughters from his previous marriage to Huang Qiuyan.
His family life has received less public attention than his movie career. In recent years, Li has increasingly spoken about personal growth, spirituality, charity, and the experiences that shaped his life beyond Hollywood.
Jet Li 2026 Update
2026 has been an important year for Jet Li’s personal reflections and public writing. Harvard Business Review published an interview with him in its May–June 2026 issue, focusing on his career, personal transformation, discipline, and changing sense of purpose.
The interview also discusses his new memoir, Beyond Life and Death. Li reflected on his childhood, martial-arts career, international movie success, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, charitable work, and his study of Buddhism.
Did Meryl Streep and Jet Li Ever Work Together?
There is no confirmed shared movie or major television production featuring Meryl Streep and Jet Li. Their established filmographies show two separate career paths, with Streep concentrating mainly on character-driven cinema and television while Li became internationally known for martial-arts and action productions.
This distinction is important because celebrity names can become connected through search pages, social media posts, fan discussions, and automatically generated entertainment content. A shared search term does not necessarily indicate that two actors have worked together or have a personal relationship.
Are Meryl Streep and Jet Li Friends?
There is no reliable public evidence establishing a close friendship between Meryl Streep and Jet Li. There are also no well-documented reports identifying them as business partners, relatives, or romantic partners.
This does not prove that the two actors have never met. Famous performers can encounter each other at private events, festivals, awards ceremonies, or industry gatherings without developing a publicly documented relationship. The available evidence simply does not establish a notable personal connection.
Different Paths to International Fame
The careers of Streep and Li demonstrate how international movie careers can develop through completely different artistic traditions. Streep built her reputation through language, character transformation, emotional performances, and a wide range of genres.
Li’s international identity developed from martial-arts cinema. His competitive wushu background gave him a physical performance style that translated effectively into action films. His Hollywood work then introduced that style to audiences who may not have previously followed Chinese martial-arts cinema.
Their Influence on Cinema
Streep’s influence can be seen in the way she moved between dramatic roles, comedy, musical performances, television, and major literary adaptations. Her ability to play characters from different cultures and social backgrounds became one of the defining features of her career.
Li contributed differently to global cinema by helping connect Chinese and Hong Kong martial-arts traditions with Hollywood action filmmaking. His international projects introduced his movement-based style to a broad audience and helped establish him as a recognizable global action star.
What to Know About Their 2026 Status
As of 2026, Streep remains active in major film and television projects, with her voice role as Aslan in Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew representing one of her most notable upcoming projects. The movie is scheduled for 2027.
Li’s 2026 activity has focused more strongly on reflection, writing, and personal philosophy. His Beyond Life and Death memoir and Harvard Business Review interview provide a recent look at his experiences beyond his best-known action-film career.
Conclusion
Meryl Streep and Jet Li represent two very different forms of international movie stardom. Streep developed a career built around dramatic range, character transformation, comedy, musicals, and television, while Li became globally recognized through wushu, martial-arts cinema, and Hollywood action films.
There is no confirmed major professional or personal relationship between the two actors. Their names may appear together online, but their documented careers remain separate. In 2026, Streep continues to take on major acting projects, while Li has turned greater attention toward personal reflection and his memoir Beyond Life and Death.
